Independent Living residents traded Chesterfield County for the coast on Wednesday, Aug. 19, as they gathered in the Springdale Bistro for Lucy Corr’s first-ever Beach Party.
The 3 p.m. start time turned out to be a suggestion. Guests began arriving 45 minutes early in leis, visors and floral shirts. Inflatable palm trees and seashell-and-sand centerpieces filled the room, with a pink flamingo standing guard over a wading pool packed with ice, wine and beer.
Captain Cork, a Richmond steel drum and electric mandolin duo, played tropical takes on pop classics while partiers settled in for table games and a raffle. The buffet, prepared by the on-site culinary team, included beach party favorites such as pigs in blankets, spinach and artichoke dip, charcuterie and cupcakes crowned with tiny paper umbrellas.
“Our culinary team already does so much each day, preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner across five dining areas on campus,” said Elizabeth Vaughan, executive assistant. “We really appreciate how our team goes above and beyond.”
August marks the anniversary of Hawaii’s statehood, which Cassandra Mitchell — in her previous role as an activities director — typically celebrated by throwing a luau. “This one turned into a beach party, which is fine with me,” said Mitchell, sales and marketing manager for Independent Living.
She spent the afternoon keeping a happy eye on the crowd, whose fun-in-the-sun energy evoked classic beach party films. “I just saw a resident smuggle a beach ball,” she laughed. “I’ll have to give her a hard time about that.”
Renee Seay, Independent Living concierge, planned the event. It’s one of several gatherings on the calendar this year, with a fall celebration and a Christmas party still to come.
